Exploration, particularly on skis, is a passion of ours. We will explore the rugged coastline of the Beagle Channel and towering mountains of the Darwin Mountain Range by kayak and ski.
Our approach, which will involve up to 100+ kilometres of kayaking, exploring the rugged coastline of the Beagle Channel to access our base camp. We will then explore the towering mountains of the Darwin range by ski, sharing our story along the way.
Most aspects of our expedition will be condition dependent. We are aware of the extreme storms that can hit this region of the world and are therefore planning to be in the region for approximately five weeks to allow for one or two weather windows. Wind and rain will impact the speed at which we can make our approach. We will camp along the way in safe locations until we reach a suitable base camp.
Patagonia
The unique landscape of Patagonia encompasses needle-sharp mountains, baron deserts, lush grasslands, ancient forests, lakes and fjords. The Patagonian ice fields stretch across the Andes for hundreds of kilometers. These ice fields are the largest in the southern hemisphere outside of Antarctica and the third largest in the world and are melting at some of the highest rates on the planet. Because they are melting directly into the ocean they can lead to drastic changes in sea level, significantly impacting coastal communities. Scientists are studying the region from space, air and the ground to predict what glaciers in Antarctica and Greenland might look like in the future with a warmer climate.
